TreeCycle - Television Series- Documentary
4,100 miles. 17 states. 72 days. One Country. This is the story of one man’s epic journey across the phenomenal landscape of India. As the protagonist Shrenik Rao cycles his way from the spiritual lands end town of Kanyakumari to the conflict ridden mountains of Kashmir, he is confronted with the country’s harsh realities, even as he is captivated by its enduring charm. Over the span of 72 days, he comes face to face with the real India – from its rich spiritual heritage to its unexplored beauty to its distinct eccentrics to its inherent spirit of secularism to the heart breaking realities of child labour and caste discrimination. This six part documentary film not only traces Rao’s physical journey across 17 states, but also gives us a glimpse into his personal journey as he starts to question his basic beliefs and develops a newfound appreciation for his life. He meets and talks to people from all walks of life, in the process gaining new perspectives on the environment and life in India. Myriad experiences dot Rao’s journey across the country – from sleeping at Gandhi’s Ashram to cycling dressed up as a Kathakali dancer to a meeting with a grave yard dwelling shaman to a visit to the interiors of the Mudumalai tiger reserve to experiencing the sunset at 12,000 feet above sea level. Conceptualised by Rao during a ride in the Pentlands in Scotland,
the TreeCycle expedition eventual-
ly covered 4,100 Kms and raised a pledge of three million trees in support of the United Nations Env-
ironmentProgramme’s Billion
Tree Campaign.
